BIO / ARTIST STATEMENT
As a Melbourne artist I embrace my surrounds but yearn for the wilderness, coastal solitudes and bushland. I have travelled globally and frequently return to East Gippsland where I spent my childhood. There I find inspiration observing nature’s beauty for my painting, writing, photography, bush walking, beach combing and fishing. A self-taught artist, I attribute my love of art to my early childhood upbringing in Maffra. During my early education I was encouraged by the Sisters of St Joseph who saw and appreciated my potential as I sketched and painted depicting my surrounds at every opportunity.
I am also fond of writing and during the trying months of the Covid 19 lockdowns in Melbourne and Victoria I felt compelled to write about its impact through the eyes of a child. “Iris the Virus” is written in verse with simple illustrations resulting from borrowed coloured pencils owned by neighbour’s children (we were locked down in Marlo). It was designed as a tool to assist in understanding this most unusual time and equally enjoyed by children and adults alike.
Retirement finally gave me the opportunity to fully embrace my passion of painting and oils are my go to medium. Joining DVAS in 2009, and becoming a committee member soon afterwards.
Representing our members and being a part of this team of volunteers gives me much satisfaction.
My paintings have found new homes throughout Australia and the US…so many paintings yet to be painted, so little time…..
